You see, last year my husband and I fell upon some very difficult financial times after a medical emergency. My husband had a brain tumor and had to have surgery and physical rehabilitation afterward. I was at his side during the entire process. When he returned home from the hospital he was not able to be left alone. I found myself in a position where we needed income but I was not able to leave the house to go off to work. I thought about my talents and my options and decided that I would do what people continually compliment me on – cooking.

I knew that I did not want to be in a long-term business and that I did not want to be completely tied to my kitchen. I had to make as much money as I could in as little time as I could. I thought about business models that would help me accomplish my goal. In the end, I was able to bake cookies for two weekends and net $900.

My financial hardship happened before our nation’s financial crisis started to affect everyone else. As we began realize that there really was a recession I saw more stories of how people were digging in deep to find ways to make ends meet.

I also watch people in grocery stores. I look at what they have in their grocery carts and watch as they pay. I cringe when I see a store brand of orange juice being rung up when the name brand is not only on sale for less, but there was a coupon in the past Sunday’s newspaper. People follow patterns and simply do not pay attention to their purchases. They’re missing out on keeping money in their pockets.

There are so many times that I want to reach out to people and share my knowledge with them. If there is an opportunity and I think the information will be received in the spirit it is given, I do. Sometimes I give coupons to people standing in line behind me.

The writing of Cooking Up Some Dough is in part my attempt to help people find a way to put some money in their pockets. The book gives people the means to keep their hard earned money in their pocket, keep from throwing it away and add more money to their piggy banks.
In this blog I will explore many topics that impact the choices we make in regard to food, money and family life. Hope you enjoy!
